The Pre-Conference Training Seminar on Methods will focus on Visual ethnographies of education, migration and childhood, and is organized within the framework of the Trans-Emigra research project leaded by Dr. Montserrat Rifà and Dr. Marta Bertran.
"Visual ethnographies of education, migration and childhood" is a methodological workshop organized within the framework of the competitive public project “Migration and transnational spaces of education: the construction of the identity of Moroccan, Pakistani and Senegambian girls, mothers and fathers in Spain”. The objective of the workshop is to present, discuss and analyse qualitative methodological proposals as videographic observation, visual auto/biographical narratives and other techniques, as tools for visual collaborative ethnography.
The aim of the project “Migration and transnational spaces of education: the construction of the identity of Moroccan, Pakistani and Senegambian girls, mothers and fathers in Spain” is to examine how transnational educational spaces contribute to the construction of cultural and social identities of Moroccan, Pakistani and Senegambian girls, mothers and fathers in the context of migration and social change in Spain. To approach this question, the theoretical framework is constructed from the interplay of the following disciplines: (1) Studies on migration, transnationalization and feminist-critical pedagogies, (2) anthropology of education and metropolitan studies, (3) postcolonial theories and feminist post-structuralism. Methodologically, the research will be conducted as a visual collaborative ethnography. The units of analysis are the girls and their family units, with a preference for the analysis of the mother-daughter and father-daughter relationship as socializing agent and possible model. This research visualizes the agencies of girls as active participants in the research, along with families, for a better understanding of this challenge that will facilitate the optimization of resources in education and care.
